Work on the Church, or Chiesa, of San Francesco was begun in the 13th century, but was only completed during the 16th century. The façade contains three doors in Gothic style decorated with floral and geometric elements. Over one of the doors is found a 16th century statue of Pope Julius II, probably the work of the famous artist Bernardino da Cortona. The interior of the church is composed of three naves separated by octagonal columns that support cross vaults.

On either side of the church there is a tower, both dating to the 1400s. One of the most important Ascoli Piceno attractions for the faithful is the wooden polychrome “Christ on the Cross” contained within this church. This cross miraculously remained intact after a fire consumed its previous residence. It is further considered miraculous because of the fact that a number of witnesses claim that they have seen the cross bleed real blood. In the sacristy, furthermore, there is furniture dating to the 1700s, certain paintings of value and a copper reliquary that dates to the 1300s.
