A big part of Asti tourism centers on the impressive historical festival held in the city every year, known as the Palio di Asti. The Palio was essentially a medieval bareback horse race among the districts of the city of Asti, though, the modern Palio, which takes place in September, has been expanded to include a number of other components and events in the festivities. Indeed, one of the most anticipated pre-race events is the Corteo Storico, or Historical Parade, in which locals representing the various districts of the city dress up in medieval costumes and parade through the main streets of the historical center of Asti.

There is also a market, with local food and souvenirs representing Asti’s districts, as well as a number of richly laden banquets. Accompanying the banquets is music and dancing, in addition, obviously, to some good wine. Moreover, tourists enjoy checking out the flag throwing displays, which usually occur on the Thursday before the actual horseback race. On this day, one of the main squares of the city, Piazza San Secondo, is lit up with medieval colors and sounds while groups of young locals show off their skills. Festivities around the Palio have been going on since the 12th century.
