What you need to know before traveling to Bari

Bari is a province in the southern region of Apulia (“Puglia” in Italian); this region makes up the heel of the Italian boot. The province is world famous for its beaches, and summer tourism is booming. It also boasts a rich historical heritage, with Romanesque cathedrals and Norman castles. The main city of the province, also called Bari, houses the remains of St. Nicholas in a large Romanesque Basilica, constructed between 1089 and 1197. If you visit the town of Alberobello, you can check out the very typical houses constructed here, starting from the 15th century; these houses are called “trulli” and are made of rocks without mortar, with cupolas for roofs. Stop by the town of Capurso and check out the religious festivities centering on the Madonna del Pozzo, as well as the convent of San Francesco di Paola, constructed in the 1300's and the Chiesa Madre Church, built in the 16th century. If you find yourself in the region of Puglia for a weekend, Bari could be a fun place to visit.
