Bari tourism is most definitely aided by the presence of Bari’s international airport, now called “Karol Wojtyla”. There are also a number of Bari hotels in the vicinity of the airport. This important Apulian airport was once known as Palese Macchie Airport, or simply Bari-Palese Airport, because of the vicinity of the area of Bari known as Palese-Macchie. The airport itself is located around 8 KM northwest of the actual center of the city of Bari. Initially, it was constructed to be solely a military airport, but in 1960 it began accommodating civilian air traffic as well. Civilian flights were mainly operated by the Italian national airline, Alitalia, and connected cities like Rome, Catania, Palermo, Ancona and Venice to Apulia.

As the years have gone by, the presence of more and more air traffic has made it necessary to renovate the airport, making structures and runways larger. In 1981, a completely new structure was built, which was originally meant to hold cargo, but it eventually became the effective airport passenger terminal. In 1990, then, because of the Soccer World Cup, the terminal was renovated and amplified, as was the runway. More renovations were undertaken in 2000. Increased traffic led to the necessity of constructing a new terminal, which was completed in 2005, while at the same time, flight infrastructures were also improved. The new terminal takes up an area of about 30,000 square meters, distributed on five levels and sees air traffic from a wide variety of airlines.
