Perhaps in second place among important Bari attractions is the Cattedrale di San Sabino. This cathedral was constructed between the 12th and 13th centuries, most likely around the last thirty years of the 1100s, over a more ancient place of worship. This structure, which was the Byzantine cathedral destroyed by William I of Sicily (known as William “the Wicked”), was located over an even older structure dating to the 6th century. The crypt of the current church, where the remains of Saint Sabino are held, is located over the remains of the ancient cathedral. The crypt also houses a very important piece of art, an icon depicting the “Madonna Odegitria”.

To the right of the transept you can still see traces of the original pavement that extends beneath the central nave. Two sarcophagi are located in the minor apses, one of which houses the remains of Saint Colomba, while the second houses remains of a mixed nature. In the sacristy on the right there is an altar with a painting that depicts Saint Mauro, who is believed to be the first bishop of Bari. The façade of the church, though it has undergone numerous renovations, still retains its Romanesque style. It presents three entrances dating to the 11th century and a large rose window decorated with monsters and fantastical creatures. When visiting Bari to check out the cathedral, try to stay in one of the many Bari hotels located in the characteristic center of town.
