If you’re looking for things to do in Bari, make sure you head over to the Chiesa di San Marco dei Veneziani, or the Church of Saint Mark of the Venetians. Many of the hotels in Bari will be glad to give you directions. The façade of the church still retains, for the most part, its ancient Romanesque style with a double-pitched roof. One of the most characteristic decorations of the façade is the large rose window, which has a small winged lion at its center. The lion most likely dates to the 12th or 13th centuries. The large door, round-arched, is outlined with four arches. The two external arches are notched, while one internal arch seems to be designed with rosary beads and the second with small arches.

It originally had three naves, though the right-hand nave was destroyed. The left-hand nave, onto which opened a small entranceway, topped by the epigraph of a doctor that helped renovate the church, is no longer visible. At the entrance to the sacristy you can admire a polychrome last that depicts the Virgin of the Well, between Saints Mark and Anthony. A small bell is located above the last. The majority of the works of art inside the church date to between the Renaissance and the 19th century. The specific date of the construction of the actual church, however, is still shrouded in mystery. Some believe it was built between the years 1002 and 1003, while others believe this is false. Remains of a 10th century Byzantine structure have been found beneath the church.
