One of the most symbolic sights in Bari is the Castello Normanno-Svevo, or the Norman-Hohenstaufen Castle, an imposing fortress that is located within the historical center of the city. This medieval construction was most likely built in the first half of the 12th century, around the year 1131, though there is evidence that a fortress already existed here during Roman and ancient Greek times. Legend has it that Roger II of Sicily originally had the fortress built, though it was later destroyed in 1156 and then re-constructed and made larger in 1233 by Emperor Frederick II of Hohenstaufen.

It then became the property of Ferdinand of Aragon, who subsequently gave it to the powerful Sforza family. In the end, it returned into the hands of the Kings of Naples and became first a prison and then a barracks. Today, you can still see the ancient moat that encircles the castle on three sides (the fourth side was located along an ancient coastline), as well as the defensive walls that date to the Aragonese period. Within the defensive walls, you can still admire corner bastions. There is drawbridge and a 16th century courtyard with bulwark. The castle often hosts important cultural events and exhibits, as well as a collection of interesting archeological artifacts.
