Barletta is a city in the province of Bari, in the Southern Italian region of Puglia. This is an excellent city to visit for its wealth of monuments that range in date from medieval times to the Renaissance to the modern era. One of the most imposing sights of the city is the Colosso, a huge bronze statue measuring 4.5 meters and dating to around the 5th century; both the origins and who the statue represents are still somewhat controversial topics. The Palazzo della Marra, constructed in the 1500s, is also worth a visit.

While in Barletta, check out the Basilica del Santo Sepolcro, built in the 11th century, and the Castello, most likely built by the Normans in the second half of the 12th century. One of the most characteristic features of the town is the Disfida, or Challenge, a medieval festival commemorating a duel between a number of Italian soldiers and a number of French soldiers. You can even visit the Cantina della Disfida, the inn that tradition claims was the site of the discussion that sparked the duel.
