One of the most impressive sights in Barletta is the Castle, constructed most likely during Norman times around the 10th century. Indeed, the first mention of the castle in an official document dates to the year 1202. The heavy influence of the Hohenstaufen family is seen in sculptures depicting the Imperial eagle holding a rabbit in its claws. Indeed, in 1228, Frederick the Emperor held a famous meeting in the castle in preparation for the sixth Crusade. Following the Hohenstaufen period, the Anjou family took over the castle and contributed to its renovations. During the end of the 13th century, a chapel was constructed, and the entire structure was further fortified with the addition of imposing defensive walls and a round corner tower.

The Aragonese family then intervened in the 15th century, adding more fortifications in the form of stronger defensive walls and more corner towers. In the 19th century it was used as a weapons depot and a prison, while the beginning of the 20th century saw it used as a strategic military outpost. Starting in 1970, more modern renovations were undertaken, aimed at allowing the castle to be used as a cultural center. Within the castle today, you can see a permanent exhibit of weapons and ancient craft items, a lapidary room, a space reserved for temporary exhibits, an exhibit of important paintings from the Civic Museum, the Tourism office and the Civic Library.
