Accommodation & places to visit in Bergamo

Bergamo is in the Lombardy region of Northern Italy, approximately 40 km northeast of Milan. The city is divided into two parts, the Città Alta and the Città Bassa. The Città Alta is the medieval part of town, surrounded by defensive walls built in the 16th century by Venetians. Here, you’ll get more than your share of history and culture. There is the Piazza Vecchia, or old square, lined with numerous historical monuments. You’ll find Palazzo della Ragione, built in 1199, where the city’s administration was once housed, but which is now a sort of exhibition hall. One of the most spectacular artistic sites of the town is the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, built in 1137, which houses impressive works of art and architecture.

The Città Bassa offers some modern entertainment opportunities. There are bars, restaurants, and shops. You’ll also find the Pinacoteca dell’Accademia Carrara here, which is an academy of fine arts and an art gallery. The two parts of town are connected by both roads and cable car. So if you’re looking for the best of two worlds in a week or even a weekend, Bergamo could be the place for you.
