One of the most characteristic sights of Anzola dell’Emilia is the Tower of King Enzo, or La Torre del Re Enzo. The tower is named after King Enzo, the son of Emperor Frederick II of Hohenstaufen, who was imprisoned in the tower by the knight, Michele degli Orsi, after a battle. The imprisonment occurred around the year 1249 (evidence points to the days between the 18th and 24th of August) and King Enzo was kept in the tower until work was finished on his final prison in the city of Bologna.

At the time of King Enzo’s imprisonment, the tower was part of a much larger defensive structure, the Castle of Anzola, which actually contained four towers; the castle was constructed some time in the beginning of the 1200s. Today, all that remains of the towers of the Castle of Anzona is King Enzo’s Tower; the castle was seriously damaged in 1630 after one of the more serious of the innumerable attacks for its possession and military control. At the base of the tower, you can still see the door that provided access to the castle, walled shut most likely around the end of the 16th century.
