Castel Maggiore is a city in the province of Bologna, in the Northern Italian region of Emilia Romagna. The first documents regarding the city date back to around the 10th century, when it was called Castaniolo, from the word castagno, or chestnut; indeed, legend has it that the large trunk of a chestnut tree washed up into the town from a nearby canal. It became Castel Maggiore in 1818 by order of Napoleon. From an environmental standpoint, you can visit the Canale Navile, an ancient waterway that connected the main city of Bologna to the plain on which Castel Maggiore is located; in some points, you can even catch a glimpse of the remains of water mills once present.

You can also check out the River Reno, the second most important region of the Emilia Romagna region after the River Po. Finally, there are a few churches that are worth visiting. Check out the Chiesa di Sant’Andrea, the Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista and the Chiesa di San Biagio, the oldest church in town. For a quiet little village to explore for a weekend, Castel Maggiore is the place for you.
