Some of the most popular sights in Badia are the ancient, yet partly renovated, watermills that were once so important to the local economy. Today, they are important, but mainly as tourist attractions. Though the watermills are not found consistently throughout the entire Badia Valley, there is a concentration of them in one spot, dubbed “La Valle dei Mulini”, or “The Valley of the Watermills”. There are about thirty watermills in this valley, many of which are still functioning. As mentioned, these watermills were an integral part of the local economy, which was based entirely on agriculture.

Tourists love to check out the intricate yet simple mechanisms that make the watermills work. There are about eight in the area that are functioning, all located along a stream called the Seres. There is also a path, about 1.5 KM long, equipped for visiting tourists, which leads visitors from one renovated watermill to the next. These watermills constitute a mere glimpse of a part of a very deeply rooted cultural tradition that is unique within Italy.
