The province of Campobasso is in the central region of Molise. There are a number of archaeological remains that attest to its antiquity, such as ancient sanctuaries, a Samnite necropolis or two, various fortifications, Roman villas and a necropolis of Lombard origin. There are other important monuments as well, which span the Middle Ages and modern times; check out the numerous castles and suggestive churches that dot the province. If you’re in the capital city, also called Campobasso, be sure not to miss the Castello Monforte, built in 1459, the Cathedral, built in 1504, and the Church of San Giorgio, thought to have been built around 1099 over an ancient temple once dedicated to Hercules. Another interesting city in the province is Termoli, famous for a large promontory on which the ancient fishing village of the city is found. The sight of the city is impressive, given its thick defensive walls that drop straight down to the sea.
