Vitulazio is located in the province of Caserta in the region of Campania, Italy. It is just 35 kilometers from Naples, the capital of the region. But the closest major town is Caserta, just 15 kilometers away. The town can trace its origins back to the Etruscans, and in fact the current church Santa Maria C. Vetere was built on top of an Etruscan temple. But archaeological remains near the Masseria Santo Vito di Vitulazaio have shown that humans have inhabited the area since at least the 7th century B.C.
There are many more signs of the past Roman inhabitation of the town, some of which were left by the noted Roman family of the Gracchi. These include the Chiesa dei Luciani and the Piazza Papa Giovanni XXIII. Although the town once had an important strategical position in the area’s defense, it has today become more an agricultural zone than a military one.
