A great deal of Aci Castello tourism is focused on the picturesque area of Acitrezza. Acitrezza is an old fishing district found within the town of Aci Castello; it is located on the Ionian Sea and its fishing heritage is indeed ancient. It has been associated with the legend of Ulysses and the Cyclops; legend has it that the Cyclopes worked under Mt. Etna, forging the thunderbolts that Zeus would wield as King of the Gods. It was thought that Acitrezza was the place where Ulysses encountered one of the Cyclopes in his long voyage home after the Trojan War.

Besides its ancient heritage and mythological undertones, Acitrezza is also well known as a popular summer vacation spot. Indeed, a great number of Italians visit this small fishing village when the weather starts getting warmer because of its crystal clear waters and inviting beaches. If you’re in Acitrezza towards the end of June, you can even enjoy the characteristic Feast of San Giovanni, in honor of Acitrezza’s patron saint.
