The coastal town of Aci Castello, with over 18,000 residents, is found in the Catania Province of eastern Sicilia. Having grown up around the 11th century Castle of Aci, said to be of Norman origin and Bourbon renovation (today, also a museum), most hotels in Aci Castello are within walking distance of this most famous monument. Like much of the Island of Sicily, the city center of Aci Castello has been inhabited for several thousand years. There are several ancient stories that attribute its founding to the lost city Greek city of Xiphonia, and this is borne out by the discovery of the massive Necropolis of Aci during a construction project in the 1970s. Part of the larger House of Aci until the 17th century, the other towns of Aci (though their growth was delayed for many years by the eruption of nearby Mount Etna) are today, nearly contiguous with Aci Castello.
