Adding to the mythological nature of the small fishing village of Acitrezza is the presence of a series of massive basalt rocks in the Sea off the coast of the village. Technically, these rocks are the result of an underwater volcanic eruption, and may have even been attached to the mainland at some point. Among the locals, however, the geologic nature of the Faraglioni is ignored and they are given a more legendary origin. They are called the Islands of the Cyclopes (Le Isole dei Ciclopi) because of their connection to the legend of Ulysses and the King of the Cyclopes, Polyphemus.

According to the legend, Ulysses landed around the village of Acitrezza and encountered Polyphemus, who proceeded to eat Ulysses’s men; in order to escape, Ulysses resorted to blinding the Cyclops. Polyphemus was furious and began hurling large rocks at Ulysses and his men as they ran to their ships and set sail. The massive basaltic rocks known as I Faraglioni are believed to be the rocks that Polyphemus threw at Ulysses; their presence does wonders for Aci Castello tourism. This collection of legendary rocks has today become a natural marine reserve and can be toured from the sea by hiring small boats that travel from rock to rock.
