L’Isola Lachea, or Lachea Island, is the largest of the basaltic rocks found off the coast of the historic fishing village of Acitrezza; it is ellipsoid in shape, 250 meters long and 150 meters wide, with a total surface area of about 2 hectares. Some experts claim that the island was actually inhabited by Phoenicians, who constructed various fortifications or who used the area as a place of worship; two “homes” have been found on the island, which were inhabited in 500 and in 647. Given their size, it is almost certain that more than one person worked on the construction of the structures and some experts claim that they weren’t homes at all, but tombs constructed by members of the ancient tribe of the Sicels.

Tools, like axes, have also been found on the island. Saracens constructed fortifications and towers have been constructed on the island from the 700s all the way to the 16th century. Today, the island houses a very important Center of Biological Study for the University of Catania and the area around it (including the other Cyclopean Isles, or I Faraglioni) has become an important natural marine reserve. The island itself is also one of the most important geological sights of Aci Castello, thanks to its volcanic origins and the presence of a wide variety of interesting mineral deposits.
