Found in the eastern Sicilian province of Catania, Acireale is a coastal city of over 52,000 residents that was built on the volcanic plain of nearby Mount Etna, locally known as the “Timpa.” Called Aquilia in Roman times, little remains of its ancient past. The city center that exists today is typical of Medieval construction on the Island of Sicilia, with several churches and the Acireale Town Hall dating back to Spanish occupation in the 17th century, as do several centrally located Acireale hotels. The cultural center of town revolves around the Basilica dei Santi Pietro e Paolo and the Piazza del Duomo, while the Basilica Collegiata di San Sebastiano is perhaps the most famous church.

In February of each year, the massive, internationally known Carnival of Acireale, dating back to the 16th century, winds its way through the city center of Acireale.
