The province of Como is located in the northern Italian region of Lombardy, or Lombardia in Italian. On its northwestern limit, it borders the country of Switzerland; in fact, it has an exclave in the Ticino Canton of Switzerland, the town of Campione dItalia. The province encompasses a wide variety of geographical characteristics, including mountains, lakes, hills and plains. There are numerous valleys that are environmentally important and which attract large numbers of tourists interested in outdoor activities. Within this province, there is the world famous town of Bellagio, a destination for the international elite. The capital city of the province, also know as Como, is located on one of the deepest lakes in Europe, Lake Como. While youre in the main city, check out the Cathedral, built in the 15th century, the museum dedicated to Alessandro Volta and the Castel Baradello, a castle built in 1158. Head out to the smaller towns and cities of the province, like Plesio or Bizzarone, to get a taste of local traditions. If your travels through Italy take you to Lombardy for a weekend, Como is the perfect place to visit.
