Visitors come to Lake Como annually. Others prefer to explore the historic attractions of the core, including the 16th century tapestries of the Duomo. They can take a pleasant stroll through the Giardio Pubblico (Public Gardens) or head straight to the city’s heart, the Piazza Cavour, with its cafes, shops and sights.
The Duomo or Cathedral of Como dates from 1396. Inside the Lombard Gothic to Renaissance structure, is a lush interior. The Dome is by Filippo Juvara (1678-1736). The façade features two of Como’s most famous sons, Pliny the Elder and Pliny the Younger. Besides the Duomo, you should visit the colorfully striped Town hotel (Brolette) beside the Torre del Commune. Both buildings date from the 13th century. If you have the time and the money, stay longer. You might even have time for the Museo Diddattico della Seta with its artifacts and exhibits on the local silk industry.
