Menaggio Hotels and Accommodation
Menaggio is yet another one of those charming and picturesque lakeside towns found along Lake Como; it’s located on the western side of the lake, about 18 km south of the Swiss border. It is a very old town, originally having been occupied by the Gauls during the Bronze Age; later, around 200 BC, the Romans took over. Medieval times saw the construction of fortifications and towers; indeed, the higher part of town maintains a Medieval look, with steep stairs, stone buildings and narrow alleys.
In the 19th century, Menaggio followed the path of other Lake Como towns; the rich constructed luxurious villas on the shores of the lake and the town became a popular holiday vacation for the wealthy and, occasionally, the not so wealthy. The Villa Mylius Vigoni is a spectacular hilltop villa that can be visited today; it’s been turned into a museum. Not far from Menaggio, at Varenna (which you can reach by boat), there is also Villa Monastero, part of which has also been turned into a museum.
