What you need to know before traveling to Cosenza

Cosenza is a province in the southern Italian region of Calabria. The Pollino chain of mountains as well as the Sila Mountains are found in this province, along with the longest river in Calabria. Besides the natural park found in the Sila Mountains, the province of Cosenza also hosts the Pollino Natural Reserve. The capital city of the province, also named Cosenza, has been called the “Athens of Calabria”, due to its cultural past; indeed, the Academy of Cosenza (Accademia Cosentina) was one of the first academies founded in Italy and it is still standing today. The main street of the city, Corso Mazzini, has been turned into a sort of “open air museum”, with numerous sculptures created by various international artists, like Salvador Dalì, lining the path. Head out of the capital and visit the other towns and cities of the province, including Castrovillari. Here, you can take a walk through the ancient city streets that retain much of their medieval nature. If you find yourself in southern Italy for a weekend, Cosenza should definitely be on your to do list.
