If you’re looking for things to do in Amantea, you should take a walk up to Amantea Castle, or what remains of Amantea Castle. The castle has ancient origins, probably having been constructed around the 13th century. Even before the official construction of what became Amantea Castle, though, the structure may have constituted the acropolis of settlements during Roman times; indeed, news of a defensive structure on the spot where the castle stands today is found as far back as 640. The true founders of the medieval castle, though, were the Normans, who initially started building a defensive structure around the year 1000.

During the Hohenstaufen reign, the castle was expanded and a defensive wall around the town was built; not far from the castle a monastery was built as well. Over the years, the castle was attacked, rebuilt, expanded and further fortified; a massive watch tower can still be seen today, which at one time looked out over the entire settlement. The castle is in a state of ruins today because there was an attempt to purposely demolish it with mines. The ruins left, though, of both the castle (of which the large watch tower is one of the most impressive parts) and the monastery are still worth visiting.
