South of Naples, on the Tyrrenian Sea in Calabria, the small city of Scalea is home to over 10,000 residents. Here, where the rugged terrain goes all the way to the sea, the entire old town is laid out upon steps. There is very little room for hotels in Scalea to be found here, so most are located just a short distance outside the walls of the nearly complete Renaissance-era Old City. Since so very many visitors arrive each summer, Scalea hotels exist to fit just about any whim or desire.

Perhaps the most visible symbol of the town is the Palazzo of the Spinelli Princes that dates from the 13th century a castle and standing tower from the Middle Ages. The similarly old Torre Cimalonga is also home to a museum with many local artifacts. Many of the best hotels are found near the seaside or within the new Scalea Marina complex. The local beaches are also very popular, as is seaside dining. Even with discount hotels, Scalea still has plenty of upscale lodging opportunities to choose from, many which include spa treatments.
