What you need to know before traveling to Enna

The province of Enna is located on the island of Sicily and is completely landlocked, with no access to the sea. It is an ancient area, being the theater of many myths, including the kidnapping of Persephone by Pluto and the labors of Hercules. Today, it is rich in natural beauty, with many lakes, and it is growing in social and economical importance; indeed, Europe’s largest amusement park will be built here in 2009. Its rich natural resources have contributed to the creation of the many natural reserves housed here, including the Riserva Naturale Speciale Lago di Pergusa and the Riserva Naturale orientata Monte Altesina. The capital city, also called Enna, has a rich history, almost as long as the province itself. It has been inhabited by Sicani, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Normans, Hohenstaufens and Aragonese. When visiting the city, check out the Castello di Lombardia, a Norman castle built over a fifth century temple to Ceres. You should also check out the famous town of Piazza Armerina, known around the world for the Roman mosaics of Villa del Casale.
