Barberino Val d’Elsa attractions include the Pieve di Sant’Appiano, an ancient church that houses the remains of Saint Appiano, who lived in the area in the 4th and 5th centuries. The existence of a religious structure in this spot can be traced to Etruscan times, given the fact that it seems as if a pagan temple was located where we find the remains of the church’s baptistery. Today, you can still see the imposing remains of a Romanesque church, with attached cloisters, and columns that once belonged to the baptistery, which have sculpted capitals that bear Christian symbols. The actual Catholic church was mentioned for the first time in a document dating to the year 990, while the building that can be seen today was built between the 12th and 13th centuries.

The interior of the church has three naves and a semicircular apse, along with a crypt. There are still a number of works of art that you can admire here, including a fresco depicting the Madonna and Child, 16th century frescoes covering the vault of the chapel of the Assumption, as well as frescoes in other parts of the church. Next to the Pieve di Sant’Appiano there is the Antiquarium di Sant’Appiano, which is somewhat of an archeological museum that gathers together a number of remains found in local excavations.
