The beautiful abbey church Badia Fiorentina is situated on the Via del Proconsolo in the Duomo district, in the very heart of old town Florence, across the street from Casa di Dante museum. The badia or abbey, was founded in the late 10th century and dedicated to the Virgin, and was one of the chief buildings of medieval Florence. It is also where Dante is buried, and till this day a Mass is still said for the repose of his soul every 21 December.

Over the centuries, the abbey acquired or inherited several of the surrounding properties and thus was able to grow and change with the times. In the late 13th to early 14th century, the Romanesque church was rebuilt in Gothic style. Then from 1627 to 1631 the church underwent reconstruction and was given a Baroque style, using the ‘Greek Cross’ plan. One of the Badia Fiorentina greatest masterpieces is the altarpiece of “The Virgin appearing to St Bernard”, which was painted by Filippino Lippi around 1486. Despite the many alterations the abbey has had over the centuries, the church of Badia Fiorentina has managed to remain a beautiful landmark that is a must see when in Florence.
