Staying in a cheap hotel by the Church of Santissima Annunziata in Florence places you right at the Basilica della Santissima Annunziata (Basilica of the Most Holy Annunciation). This is a Roman Catholic basilica located at the northeastern side of the Piazza Santissima Annunziata. It is also the Servite Order’s Mother church. The Order was founded in 1240 by seven original members, as was the church. In 1262, one of the monks abandoned a painting of the Annunciation, because he did not feel he could create a beautiful enough image. However it is said that an angel completed it while he slept. This painting was placed in the church and became a special tribute. The facade of the church was added in 1601 by the architect Giovanni Battista Caccini, in the Baroque finish that the seventeenth century was so fond of.

The miraculous painting made the church famous, and pilgrims who came to the church often left wax votive offerings, many of them life-size models of the donor. In 1516 the Chiostrino dei Voti, a special atrium, was built to house all of these figures. By the late 18th century there were hundreds of these images collected, and they had become one of the city's great tourist attractions. However in 1786 they were all melted down to make candles. Today Florentine brides plan a visit to the shrine for a quick prayer and to leave their flower bouquets.
