Santa Maria del Carmine is a large church which stands in the Piazza of the same name. As part of the Carmelite convent, which is still existing today, the building of the church was begun in 1268 but was not completed until 1476. So this can be seen in the fact that there are both Romanesque and Gothic elements throughout the building. The Santa Maria del Carmine church received some remodelling in both the 16th and 17th centuries. Most of it had to be rebuilt, as it was badly damaged by a fire in 1771. The Latin cross with a single nave flanked by various chapels was the floor plan used.
