The Basilica of Santa Maria del Santo Spirito or Cathedral of St. Mary of the Holy Spirit is one of the main churches of Florence, Italy. Everyone simply calls it Santo Spirito now. It is located in the square by the same name in the Oltrarno quarter of Florence. The interior of the building is a superior example of Renaissance architecture. The construction of the cathedral commenced in 1443 on the site of a 13th century Augustinian convent, and it was consecrated in 1481. It follows the Latin cross design, with the 38 side chapels running along the entire perimeter. The bell tower was added in 1503. In the transept is a choir from which the Frescobaldi Marquisses could participate in the rites, without being seen by the crowd.

While the Santo Spirito may not look like the other churches of Florence from the exterior, when it was restored between 1977-78 it has all the elaborate interior of Brunelleschi's landmark church and proves to be Classicism at its best. Remember to have a good look at the stained glass window Pentecost, designed by Pietro Perugino, which is still the original glass window. The church also has numerous art pieces including a youthful work by Michelangelo called ‘Crucifix’ in wood.
