Central Library of Florence

The Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale or The National Library is located along the Arno River in the Fortezza da Basso area. The library was founded in 1714 when a famous Italian scholar, Antonio Magliabechi, donated his entire collection of approximately 30,000 books to the city of Florence. From 1743 onwards, a copy of every book published in Tuscany had to be submitted to the library, which was opened to the public in 1748.
