The Palazzo Pitti is a huge Renaissance palazzo that was constructed on the south bank of the River Arno not far from Ponte Vecchio. Though impressive, this severe palace was built originally for the Florentine banker Luca Pitti, in 1450. By 1549 the Medici family had bought it, and in their care it became the main residence of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. The Palazzo grew as each generation added on to its treasures and luxuries. The family amassed priceless art objects, paintings, sculptures including fine furniture.

After, having been a part of a lot of turbulent history, the palace and its contents were given to the Italian people in 1919 by King Victor lll. It became one of Florence’s largest art galleries.
