In the late 19th century, the location of the Dante Alighieri’s family home was discovered, and by 1911 the municipality administrators of Florence ordered the building of a house to honor their famous son. Presumably the Casa di Dante was built in the same location as his original home. The museum is set up on the three floors of the Casa. The first floor features aspects of 13th century Florence and the poet’s early years, with displays of series of documents, reproductions of weaponry and models. The second floor is dedicated to Dante’s life and work while in exile from his beloved Florence and the last twenty years of Dante’s life, his travels around Italy and his death in Ravenna in 1321. The third floor displays things related to Dante and many different editions of the poets ‘Divina Commedia’ possibly his best work.
