Because the population was growing and Florence needed more space for its shops, a special commission was formed in 1869 and it went to work with pickaxes, and tore down a group of houses on each street in the old neighborhood by the Camaldoli of San Lorenzo. This opened up a large piazza and made room for the new covered market. Giuseppe Mengoni, the architect who designed the market with remarkable results, knew how to integrate new elements with the old, uniting the classical with the most innovative materials of the era: cast iron and glass.
