The Università degli Studi di Firenze, UNIFI, University of Florence is the oldest and largest university in Florence, Italy. It currently consists of 12 faculties with about 60 thousand enrolled students. The ‘Studium of Florence’ was originally established in 1321. In 1859 it became the Istituto di Studi Pratici e di Perfezionamento, and a year later it was recognized as a full fledged university by the government of the unified Italy. In 1923, the Istituto was officially denominated a University by the Italian Parliament.

The Polo delle Scienze Sociali, (campus of social sciences) houses Economics, Law and Political Sciences, Psychology, Literature, Philosophy and Pedagogy in the Novoli district. Medicine, Surgery, Pharmacology, and certain scientific and engineering departments are located in the Careggi district. The Faculty of Mathematical, Physical and Natural Sciences is located in the Sesto Fiorentino district. Engineering is located at the Saint Marta Institute, while the Faculty of Agriculture is in front of the Parco delle Cascine.
