Basilica di San Lorenzo in Florence is located at the middle of the city’s main market district. The church and official seat of the Bishop was dedicated to St Lawrence the Martire in 395. In 1420, the Medici family commissioned leading architects and artisans to renovate ‘their’ church. They spared no expense in refurbishing and altering the cathedral. Work was completed in 1461, and it became the burial place of all the principal members of the Medici family.
The Basilica di San Lorenzo contains many important architectural works, and features a lot of notable art by a long list of famous artisans. They include Desiderio da Settignano, Donatello, Filippo Lippi, Bronzino, Verrocchio, Antonio del Pollaiuolo, Rosso Fiorentino. The Old Sacristy by Brunelleschi, the Laurentian Library by Michelangelo, the New Sacristy and the cloisters based on Michelangelo's designs and the Medici Chapels by Matteo Nigetti are all masterpieces in their own rights. A visit to Florence just wouldn't be complete without including the Basilica di San Lorenzo.
