The Fortezza da Basso is a splendid Citadel that was built under the growing threat of restless political upheavals in 1534 by the Sangallo family. This was one of the first fortresses built in Italy. It has several powerful bastions, many turrets, filled with narrow secret passages and parapet walks. The Fortezza da Basso proved to be an impregnable fortress, although it was never once attacked throughout all of its long history. It thus has remained intact to this day, Fortezza da Basso in Florence is a very high-profile exhibition and meeting place which houses the city’s main Exhibition Centre.
The modern pavilion which was added to the fortress in 1977 is the largest area for exhibitions in the city. Events offered are from haute couture, to arts and crafts to the tourism market exhibits. One of Florence’s charms is the way ‘olden days’ corners meshed with modern overtones.
