The Palazzo Pitti is a huge Renaissance palazzo that was constructed on the south bank of the River Arno not far from Ponte Vecchio. Though impressive, this severe palace was built originally for the Florentine banker Luca Pitti, in 1450. By 1549 the Medici family had bought it, and in their care it became the main residence of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. The Palazzo grew as each generation added on to its treasures and luxuries. The family amassed priceless art objects, paintings, sculptures including fine furniture. After, having been a part of a lot of turbulent history, the palace and its contents were given to the Italian people in 1919 by King Victor lll. It became one of Florences largest art galleries. It is fully open to the public, and houses various museums and galleries. The Gallery of Modern Art, which is on the 2nd floor and made up of 32 rooms, offers many art pieces from neo-classicism to the 20th century. The Palatine Gallery showcases masterpieces from the 16th and 17th centuries, works by Italian, Flemish, English and French artists. The Argenti Museum, Costume Gallery, Coach Museum, Ceramics Museum and more are displayed, in addition to the amassed art objects of the Medici family.
