In the past, the Piazza Santa Croce was the site of public meetings. Piazza Santa Croce in Florence puts you in not just a landmark, but where it has become the home of artists, occasional street entertainers and plenty of tourists taking in the beauties of this Florence piazza. There are plenty of souvenir shops, leather shops and some great buildings ringed around the open space. Naturally, these include the magnificent Santa Croce Church and the nicely preserved 16th century patrician house the Palazzo Antellisi on the south side.
However, the piazza also gets to be a playing field once a year, when it gets covered with dirt and violent Renaissance soccer is played on it. This is to commemorate the annual historical soccer match that was played from 1530. The game is played in “calico” (in costume) of the past. The square is also the location that chocolate lovers should head for in January. The top Chocolatiers of Tuscany get together for an annual competition and display the art of chocolate making. Samples, games, shows and live music are all a part of the festivities.
