The splendid Uffizi Gallery is one of Florence’s ‘must-see’ attractions. A trip to Florence without checking out this famous truly magnificent museum that houses a long list of universally acclaimed paintings and sculptures would be an incomplete vacation. The fabulous masterpieces of Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Michelangelo, Caravaggio, Botticelli, Mantegna, Filippo Lippi and Correggio are displayed there, as are the important works of Rembrandt, Rubens and Dürer. Besides the many Primitive and Renaissance pieces, the Uffizi museum also exhibits the Collection of Prints and Drawings and the Contini Bonacossi Collection.
The building that houses the Uffizi Galleries on its top floor was built by Giorgio Vasari. This large building, constructed in the ornate style so fashionable of the mid 16th century, took more than 20 years to complete. It used to be the administrative offices of the Tuscan State. The Art lover and collector Grand-duke Francesco I created the gallery to which many more great paintings, sculptures and works of art were subsequently added by members of the Medici family, Grand-dukes of Lorraine and then also by the State of Italy.
