If you’re looking for things to do in Arcidosso, you should definitely check out the Chiesa della Madonna dell’Incoronata (Church of the Crowned Madonna), one of the most treasured churches in the entire area of Mount Amiata, surrounding Arcidosso. To the right of the façade of the church you’ll find a beautiful fountain made of trachyte, which is of clear Medici origin. The church was built around the time when the plague ended, in the second half of the 14th century; it was the people’s way to give thanks for sparing them from any more suffering. The interior of the church contains three naves divided by columns; it was slightly modified in the 15th century.

Within the church you can admire numerous precious works of art dating to the 1400s, many of which are the work of local artists. On the wall of the right nave, you can see a fresco representing the “Madonna Incoronata”, or the “Crowned Madonna”, while over the main altar there is an important oval painting by the artist Pellegrino di Mariano depicting a “Madonna col Bambino”, or a “Madonna with Child”. On the right of the main altar there is a processional emblem composed of two faces; one represents a “Madonna Incoronata tra i Santi Sebastiano e Rocco” (“Crowned Madonna among Saints Sebastian and Rocco”) and the other the “Fondazione di Santa Maria Maggiore” (“Foundation of Santa Maria Maggiore”), both created around the end of the 16th century.
