One of the most impressive sights of Arcidosso is the Rocca Aldobrandeschi, also known as the Aldobrandeschi Castle (Castello). It is located in the highest part of the historical center of the town and was originally constructed for military and defensive purposes, rather than as a residence, around the year 950; archeological discoveries suggest that it was built over the remains of another fortification, of Lombard origin. In later times, however, it was used more and more often for civil and institutional purposes.

The castle is composed of an imposing building divided into two structures (one of which is lower than the other), characterized, in their entirety, by a square section that at times is supported by massive foundational structures. The northern side of the fortified complex is characterized by the presence of a tower that rises above the highest building of the entire fortification. The summit of the tower is crowned by a series of small blind arches, which seem to be resting on shelves. The castle has been recently restored and is today used to host various cultural events. If you climb to the top of the tower, you can enjoy a spectacular view of Mount Amiata.
