City Center Details

With over 50,000 residents, Sanremo (also San Remo) is a relatively large coastal city in the Ligurian province of Imperia. Home to human habitation for several thousand years, the city became a prominent site of Roman beach houses and horticultural production much the same as it is today. The Pigna is a part of town that has been built up around ancient walls that are still visible beneath loads of fresh laundry. Long an independent maritime state, the city boasts a quite large harbor that was recently granted Blue Flag status. Once home to a flourishing citrus trade, the cultivation of flowers has been centered here for over 200 years. The onion-domed Christ the Saviour Church is notable as a testament to the large population of Russian nobility that began wintering here during the 19th century.
