What you need to know before traveling to Lecce

The province of Lecce is located in the southern Italian region of Apulia; it is actually the province found at the very tip of the heel of the Italian boot. Within this province, there is the easternmost point of Italy, at Punta Palascìa, in the town of Otranto. Many tourists flock to this site on New Year’s Eve and wait for the first Italian sunrise of the new year at the feet of the lighthouse found here. The capital city of the province, also called Lecce, is one of the major cultural centers in this entire area; indeed, it is extremely well known for the Baroque style of its buildings, called Baroque Leccese (Baroque of Lecce), realized in a particular type of malleable limestone. Head out of the capital city to check out the town of Galatina; sights here include a number of artistically and architecturally interesting churches. A very popular tourist destination is the Basilica of Santa Caterina, declared a national monument thanks to its interior walls completely covered in frescoes. If you need to find an exciting place to visit while in Apulia for a weekend, Lecce could be perfect.
