One of the oldest Alessano attractions is the Church of Saint Anthony, or la Chiesa di Sant’Antonio, built between the 16th and 17th centuries; it is actually the oldest church in Alessano. According to legend, the church was built by Saint Francis of Assisi; initially, it was part of a Franciscan monastery, which, however, was suppressed in 1861. The façade of the church is simple and elegant, with a sloping roof and a pattern of small, blind arches; at the center of the façade, you can see a succession of four large windows with arches.

It has a single entrance, topped with a small triangular gable; to the right of the façade there is the bell tower. The inside of the church has a single large room, with three lateral chapels for each side; you can admire a 17th century painting here, which depicts the Annunciation. Along the left side of the room, there is an altar dedicated to Saint Anthony; this is a classic example of a Baroque altar, with sculpted forms.
