Sponango derives its name from the quality of the land – a sponge. It is a small town of 3,855 in Puglia, Italy with three major festivals: The Festival of Madonna di Lourdes, the Festival of S. Victoria and the Festival of the Penare. Stay in any of the Sponango hotels to take part in these celebrations. Visitors can also enjoy, upon leaving hotels in Sponango, several churches. Visit the Ciesa Madre S. Giorgio, built between 700 and 800 and widened later, to admire the great altar. Look at the clock tower (Torre dell’Orlogio) constructed in 1768 as part of the Palazzo Podestarile. For a visit on the weekend, Sponango invites travelers to go to look at the unique Dolmen Piede Grande. The Villeta S. Francisco features a simply designed but effective statue of the saint and a dog. The Palazzo Baronale is characterized by a portal in the Baroque style. However, for an interesting glimpse of daily life in Sponango go to look at the Sternove. These cisterns, until later in the 20th century, collected and stored the rainwater from the roof of the nearby church.
