The province of Leghorn, or Livorno in Italian, is located in the northern Italian region of Tuscany. The border between the Ligurian and Tyrrhenian seas is found precisely in this province. The province contains the popular tourist destination, Elba Island, popular for its views and its opportunities for superb diving. It also contains the legendary island of Montecristo, where Alexandre Dumas’ famous Count found his treasure. The island is shrouded in mystery due to the fact that almost all attempts to colonize it have failed; today, tourists can visit the island, but must make reservations far in advance. Visits can last up to six hours and no camping out on the island is allowed. If you’re visiting Elba Island, be sure to check out the town of Rio Marina. Sights to see here include the Church of San Rocco, built in the 16th century for miners that traveled from the continent to the island for work, and the Evangelical Valdese Temple, constructed at the end of the 1800's. If you’re looking for something interesting to do in Tuscany for a weekend, Leghorn may be the perfect spot.
