    The province of Massa-Carrara is located in the northern Italian region of Tuscany; it is bathed on the west by the Ligurian Sea. The province is mainly made of mountains and hills, though it does have a coastline, which attracts tourists with its clear beaches and fine sand; the capital of the province, Massa, is located along this coastline. Besides its seaside location, though, Massa is a popular tourist destination also due to the wealth of historical monuments it contains. The city was founded in the 15th century around a castle, whose remains can still be seen; you should also check out the Church and Convent of the Franciscans, built in the 17th century. While visiting the province, you should head to the town of Carrara, famous for the world-renowned Carrara marble, which is extracted from the nearby Apian Alps. Visit the town of Montignoso as well; Montignoso sights include the Church of SantEustachio and the Church of San Vito, which both contain artwork from the 15th century.
